Trip #21: Koyo spots

Around the time we are in Japan the koyo viewing time is ending in Nikko and sort of in the middle period for the Tokyo area. So here are a number of good koyo spots for our visit as recommended by japan-guide.com.

First some koyo spots in Tokyo:

Rikugien (Komagome Station (JR Yamanote Line))
Japanese landscape garden in central Tokyo. Best towards end of November. Already mentioned in trip suggestion #4.

Yoyogi Koen (Harajuku Station (JR Yamanote Line))
Western style park in central Tokyo. Best in last half of November.
Already mentioned in trip suggestion #11.

Koishikawa Korakuen (Iidabashi Station (JR Chuo/Sobu Line))
Japanese style landscape garden in central Tokyo. Best towards end of November. It is adjacent to Tokyo Dome city, so within walking distance of the hotel and it is sort of part of trip suggestion #14 Kanda.

Koyo spots around Tokyo:

Mount Takao
A wooded mountain, roughly one hour west of Shinjuku, already mentioned in a seperate trip suggestion #8 . The leaves should be best in the second half of November.

Nikko
The Oku-Nikko region around Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen should be particularly nice for koyo viewing. Depending on the elevation the trees should be most beautiful between late September and early November. Nikko is suggested as trip #19.

Hakone
The area around Lake Ashi should be particularly beautiful. The autumn leaves should be best in early November.

Fuji Five Lakes
Mount Fuji in combination with the lakes and autumn leaves should make a spectacular sight. The autumn leaves should be best in early November. We are going there in the middle as trip #5 has been 'approved'.

The progress of the koyo front can be followed here (in Japanese). As I write this, the leaves have turned red in north and the yellow leaves are closing in on Nikko.
